Becoming an Instructor

1st 4 Driving Instruction is on the Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers, otherwise known as ORDIT which means that the training, premises and materials used have all been scrutinised and inspected by the Driving Standards Agency who are the people who conduct the tests. Not all trainers and training establishments satisfy this criteria.

Graham Hooper has successfully completed another ORDIT registration (July 07) gaining an excellent grade 6 the highest mark available in 8 categories of instuctional techniques including role play, a key factor for successful driving instructor training. He has also recently had a check test (August07) where he acheived a Grade 6 in all categories the highest marks attainable. When you have finished reading this page click on about us to find out more why Graham Hooper has the skills to help you reach your aim of becoming a driving instructor.

To answer questions that you may have you should contact Graham Hooper by telephone, e-mail or in writing and then if you require further information it is then best practise to arrange an assessment. This is an interview to find out about your expectations and requirements and will include an assessment of your driving ability. It will allow you to discuss any questions that you have and what training arrangements you may require. The assessment will last approximately 2 hours.

To become a Driving Instructor you will be required to pass 3 exams commonly known as Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Part 1 is a multiple choice test of theoretical knowledge and will also include a computer based hazard perception test. All resource materials and workbooks necessary to pass this test can be supplied.

Part 2 is a test of driving ability and lasts at least an hour and is conducted on a variety of roads encompassing most traffic conditions. Training is given to bring your driving up to the required standard.

Part 3 is a test which is separated into two halves. Firstly an examiner will role play a learner that is either a complete beginner or partly trained and you will be expected to train this person for 30 minutes in a preset task. For the second part of this test the examiner will role play a pupil who is a few weeks away from taking a driving test or is already a qualified driver who needs some remedial training. Again this will be a preset task. Training is supplied.

Each exam has to be taken separately starting at part 1. You can have as many attempts at part 1 as you wish, but once you have passed part 1 you have two years to complete part 2 and 3 and are only allowed three attempts at each. If you were to fail at the 3rd attempt at either exam you will have to wait two years from the date you originally passed part 1 before you could try again. Part 1 would then have to be retaken.
